VILE

Assignment

To graduate from THUAS as an Industrial Designer I worked at OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) where I worked on creating a more seamless store-exit process at the self-checkout area in retail establishments by removing the receipt as a means of verification of payment.

Result

Vile, the Verification-Tile, is a standard store size tile with an integrated HF-RFID reader and antenna with a translucent top. The Vile is placed in front of the exit gates at the SCO-area. The reader detects the RFID-tags in the basket, that the user is mandated to carry. Once the basket is within 40 centimeters, after having succesfully paid, the gates open without having to scan the receipt. Through this innovation gain is created for:

Store-Owner
The store owner benefits from a more convenient store that attracts customers, reduces receipt printing costs, and lowers the carbon footprint.

Customer
Once the customer has paid, the reader signals the gates to open and the tile lights up green, confirming the transaction. The customer can walk through without scanning the receipt, making the experience more seamless.

Employees
Customers must take their baskets through the gates and stack them at a designated spot, typically near the entrance. This relieves staff from gathering and moving baskets.

Customer Journey

Assembly

The RFID tag is attached to the basket’s bottom using a specially designed ‘hamburger bolt,’ which consists of one hollow bolt and one traditional bolt.

Feedback

During the exit process, the customer should be informed of their status. If the tile reader detects their presence and approves the payment, the gate will open, indicated by a green light for “Go.” If the payment is unsuccessful, the gate will remain closed, indicated by a red light for “Stop,” to prevent theft.

Adoption Onboarding

The onboarding system is designed to be quick and visual. It efficiently explains the system’s purpose, functionality, benefits, and troubleshooting process. Key steps include picking up a basket, shopping, paying, and following the red or green light at the exit gate. Visual aids ensure clarity and ease of understanding, streamlining the learning curve for customers.
